Respect: a good society runs on it. Respect for fellow humans is fundamental to order and peace. Yet the strain of differing worldviews often causes respect to take a back seat in the quest to determine who is
right. We wonБt always desire to respect others. There are times when our spouses, friends and coworkers donБt deserve the respect we giveБbut weБre called to give it anyway. Here are five reasons to respect those around you, even when you donБt feel like doing so. 1. God expects it. Romans 12:10 says БOutdo one another in showing honor. Б God expects us to honor one another with the love and grace He has shown us. But when we forget how much grace weБve received, we start questioning how respectful we really need to be. We become more concerned with our own rights and privileges than GodБs command that we honor the people HeБs put in our lives. We respect others because God has set the example of honor, and because He expects us to do so, too. 2. Respect multiplies. The beauty of doing hard things for God is the blessing that follows.
When we sow respect into the lives around us, those seeds are not fruitless. Respect multiplies! When you respect someone who doesnБt deserve it, you attribute value to them. Many people are so unaccustomed to being treated with honor that they return the favor. Some of the most hardened people youБve met may blossom when given undeserving respectБthis is the nature of grace! Give grace, give honor and watch God work. 3. Everyone is an image-bearer. C. S. Lewis pointed out that everyone we interact with is an Бimmortal soul. Б ThatБs an incredible thought! Everyone we meet is created in the image of God. Even the rudest cashier, the most grumpy coworker or the most difficult parent is an image-bearer. As fellow creations of God, we need to recognize the innate value in othersБeven when that honor is unrequited. 4. Your respect is your testimony. At the end of the day, people donБt notice whether you go to church or donБt drink and swear. They remember how you made them feel. If you treat someone with honor and respectБespecially when they know they didnБt deserve itБthat respect is your testimony!
It tells them there is something different about you. You didnБt seek revenge or justice; you gave them respect. You listened. That small step is a seed planted in their heart. By offering respect, you are building trustБwhich brings us to our final point. 5. Respect builds trust. Respect builds bridges. It brings people to a place of trust. By respecting others, you re showing them that they have value (a value that originates with God). This grace draws them to you, which grants you an opportunity to share the gospel! Though it is difficult to respect others at times, remember that youБre doing it to honor GodБnot to please man. When you choose respect, God smiles. He sees, even if no one else does. Why is respect important is a simple but significant question which must be answered if someone does not have a clear viewpoint about it. But first it is important to know that what respect actually is. Respect is a basic moral value or need which makes us aware that we are human beings not wild animals.
So we should respect others and should be respected by others to prove our humane identity among all other creatures present on this earth. The awareness about respect must be instilled in every human being from his childhood whether he belongs to a lower social class or an aristocratic section of society. Respecting your parents, teachers and elders is the main step towards teaching the meaning and importance of respect in our life. Respecting others is a silent way to express our feeling for them. It\’s an unspoken way of communication which build unshaken and strong relations between people respecting each other. When a person shows respect for someone, then it means that the person have some value for him. His advices and suggestions are important for him. Some people, particularly younger generation, thinks that showing respect to someone means that you are degrading yourself. They take respect as a sign of weakness or inferiority which could harm one\’s self respect.
But it is absolutely wrong concept about the basic trait or emotion which makes us a real human being. Another way of understanding that respect important is to imagine a world without respect. Think if nobody have respect for others views and thinking, regarding every aspect of life, and try to impose his own will then what would be the situation. Certainly we will stop tolerating each other completely and will become absolutely selfish in our thoughts and deeds which is actual moral degradation. We will start slipping towards immoral actions which leave no room for existing human civilization. In short if respect is taken out of human values then there is almost no difference between a human being and a beast left, other than physical appearances. So respect others and make them to respect you through you respected and polished manners. Don\’t forget to distinguish between respect and flattering as respect makes you a human being of higher moral value while flattering makes you a degraded person with no self respect at all.
