why do we laugh at others misfortune

I wonder (no scientific backing here) could I be that when we feel empathy or guilt its due to a feeling of that s not what they deserve as opposed to those who do deserve it which we laugh at? We laugh at someone who is being stupid when they get hurt (like Jackass ) but when they re just doing their job we are shocked. I could even say this expands to people we expect to deserve it, like sitcom characters. They could have something horrible happen to them, but because that s what we are expecting, we laugh as opposed to cry. Just my half-cent.
