Someone selling a gift card on ebay is investing some effort and therefore some value in order to sell the card, presumably in an attempt to recoup the value of the card without actually spending it at the store. So the difference between the value of the card and the price being asked on ebay is ostensibly a reflection of the difference between the value that the seller places on the effort of selling the card itself and the value the seller places on the effort of buying something at the store and then either using or reselling that. In some cases selling the card itself might be easier, for instance if the seller is located in an area where that store doesn t operate, which would make it worthwhile to sell the card at less than face value rather than having to travel to a store that will take it. In other cases it might be fairly easy to use the card, which means the seller would only have a reason to sell it on ebay if by doing so they could get more money than they would spending it.
