I have a history of foot problems in my family (plantars fasciitis) and have experienced cramping in my arches ever since I was running long distance in high school. I use 3 methods to combat this. 1st stretch: sitting on my haunches, supported by the balls of my feet, adjusting my leaning until I feel the arch muscles being stretched (it helps to have something for support). 2nd stretch: Standing up and stretching the arch out by putting weight on the ball of your foot and lifting the heel up. (it is hard to do these stretches wrong).
Lastly, I use one of my mother s spiky foot therapy balls (yeah it sounds dumb) that you can find for under $5 at any sports medicine section at your sports retailer. This is the most helpful because I will sit at my desk and roll each foot with it for about 5 minutes while I m typing. It loosens up the muscle which is usually very tight for me and I haven t had foot cramping since. That s a lot to do in preparation, but I have found it much more preferable to a workout cut short by burning soles.
